NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT BEING A FATHER IN YOUR 40s…
When you are younger, being a father feels different.
You are mostly thinking about providing.
Food.
School fees.
Clothes.
A good home.
But when you get into your 40s…
You start thinking differently.
You start asking yourself:
“What am I actually building for these children?”
1. YOU REALISE YOUR TIME IS MORE VALUABLE.
Your children are growing fast.
You cannot get these years back.
So you start thinking about how you spend your time.
2. YOU START THINKING MORE SERIOUSLY ABOUT MONEY.
Not just money for today.
You start thinking about savings.
Investments.
Assets.
And what happens if you are no longer there to provide for them.
3. YOUR WORK STARTS TO MEAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
You don't just want to work hard.
You want your work to build something.
Something that can continue.
Something your children can be proud of.
4. YOU BECOME MORE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
You start asking:
“Can this business survive without me?”
Because your children don't need you to simply own a business.
They need you to build something that has value.
5. YOU START THINKING ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY DIFFERENTLY.
You are no longer only responsible for yourself.
There are people looking up to you.
Your children.
Your wife.
Your staff.
Your family.
And sometimes, other people's families too.
6. YOU START CARING ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN.
Not just what you tell them.
What they see you do.
How you work.
How you treat people.
How you handle money.
How you deal with failure.
7. YOU REALISE THAT BUILDING SOMETHING TAKES TIME.
A good company.
A good investment portfolio.
A good family.
A good reputation.
None of these things are built in one year.
So you start thinking in decades.
8. YOU START WANTING SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO YOU.
Not just a salary.
Not just a job.
Something you can build.
Own.
Improve.
And eventually pass on.
9. YOU START ASKING A BIGGER QUESTION.
“What will my children inherit from me?”
And I don't mean only money.
I mean knowledge.
Values.
Relationships.
A name they can be proud of.
And maybe…
A company.
10. YOU REALISE YOU DON'T HAVE FOREVER.
This is probably the biggest change.
When you are 25, 30 years can feel like a very long time.
In your 40s…
You start seeing time differently.
And that can change how you work.
How you spend money.
How you raise your children.
And what you decide to build.
Being a father in your 40s has made me think less about success today…
And more about what will still be standing when I am gone.
