How to Know a Toxic Company before you accept the job

The problem is that the warning often looks like normal recruitment.

Iโ€™ve worked in HR long enough to know that candidates spend so much time trying to impress the company that they forget to study the company too.

Here are things I would pay attention to before accepting an offer.

Ask your interviewer how long theyโ€™ve been there. Look at your potential manager. Look at the team on LinkedIn.

One new employee means nothing.

But when your manager joined 8 months ago, their manager joined 11 months ago, and you discover that several people have already occupied your position

Pay attention.

โ€œWe need someone proactive.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll wear many hats.โ€

Fine.

Ask one more question:

If three interviewers give you three completely different answers, remember that.

You may eventually be judged against expectations nobody agreed on.

Your 3pm interview becomes 4:30pm without explanation.

A โ€œ30-minute conversationโ€ becomes two hours.

They send an assignment Friday evening and expect it Saturday morning.

One incident can happen anywhere.

Recruitment is usually when a company is trying to make its best impression on you.

So pay attention to how they treat you when they still need you.

You applied for marketing.

Then you hear youโ€™ll also handle partnerships.

Then customer success.

Then some sales.

Then โ€œa little operations.โ€

By the end of the interview, one vacancy has quietly become four jobs.

And undefined jobs have an interesting habit:

โ€œWeโ€™re a family here.โ€

โ€œWe need people willing to go the extra mile.โ€

โ€œEveryone gives 110%.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t really watch the clock.โ€

None of these statements alone makes a workplace toxic.

But Iโ€™d ask what happens during busy periods.

How often do people work outside normal hours?

What happens after those periods?

How does the team actually take time off?

Because sometimes โ€œcommitmentโ€ has a very strange meaning:

This one is underrated.

After three interviews, you should understand the job better.

Who you report to.

Why theyโ€™re hiring.

What success means.

What the priorities are.

What youโ€™re actually being paid to solve.

If every conversation gives you a different version of the job, donโ€™t ignore that confusion because the salary looks good.

This is why I tell job seekers:

Watch the little things.

Sometimes the red flag wasnโ€™t hidden.

You were just too happy about getting the offer to notice it.
