Legal year for Lawyers

So, what exactly are Lawyers Celebrating when they say “Legal year”?

Today, Rivers State celebrated the opening of its 2026/2027 Legal Year.

You may have seen lawyers in their robes, judges, church service, Guard of Honour and a special court session and wondered:

“Please, what exactly is all this Legal Year about?”

Let me explain it in plain English.

First, Legal Year is NOT the birthday of lawyers. 😂

And it does not mean that lawyers and judges have been sitting at home waiting for today before they start working.

The Legal Year is essentially the formal beginning of a new judicial year for a particular court or jurisdiction.

It is a time for the Judiciary, lawyers and other stakeholders in the justice system to pause, look back at the previous year and look ahead at the new one.

Think of it like a new chapter for the administration of justice.

But here is the interesting part

This tradition did not start in Nigeria. The tradition can be traced back to medieval England.

Historically, judges participated in a procession from Temple Bar to Westminster Abbey for a religious service, seeking divine guidance at the beginning of the legal year.

Over time, the tradition evolved into the formal ceremonies we recognise today and because Nigeria's legal system inherited major elements of the English common law tradition, the practice of formally opening a new legal year became part of our judicial tradition too.

Now, let me make this very simple

Legal year opening is more than wearing wig and gown and taking photographs.

It provides an opportunity for the Judiciary to:

🥢 reflect on what happened during the previous legal year;

🥢 consider the achievements and challenges of the justice system;

🥢 discuss issues affecting the administration of justice;

🥢 set priorities for the new legal year;

🥢 reaffirm the commitment of judicial officers and other stakeholders to justice and the rule of law.

So when you hear:
“The Legal Year has opened.”

It is basically saying:
“A new judicial year has formally begun, and we are setting the tone for the work ahead.”

And there is something else many people don't know

Different jurisdictions don't necessarily celebrate their Legal Year on the same date.
There isn't one single date on which every state or jurisdiction must celebrate Legal Year.

That is why you may see one jurisdiction celebrate its Legal Year while another does so at a completely different time.

Today was Rivers State’s turn.

The Rivers State Judiciary opened its 2026/2027 Legal Year today, September 24, 2026.

The programme included a church thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s, Rebisi, Garrison, Port Harcourt, followed by the inspection of a Guard of Honour and a special court session at the Judges’ Ceremonial Court Hall of the High Court Complex.

And something particularly significant happened as part of the activities leading to the opening.

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, conducted a jail-delivery exercise at the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Custodial Centre, where 14 inmates were released under the applicable legal provisions.

The exercise was part of activities marking the opening of the new legal year.

So, the Legal Year is not simply:
“Lawyers wore wig and gown and went to church.” 😂

There is a deeper message behind it.

It is about reflection.

It is about renewal.

It is about accountability.

And most importantly, it is about reminding everyone involved in the justice system that behind every case number is a human being waiting for justice.

That is why the Legal Year matters.

Now that you know what Legal Year means, the next time you see lawyers celebrating it, you won't be wondering:
“What exactly are they celebrating?” 😂

You now know.

Happy 2026/2027 legal year, Rivers State
