These are ways to make sustainable income without the high stress of "hustling" or the risk of entrepreneurship....
First, you need to study and understand the art of passive income. You also need to revive your faith in paid employment - no matter how little the monthly salary is and learn how to turn underutilized assets into revenue.
Someone like Tony Elumelu is always hunting for a new employer. Even Elon Musk recently took a job under Trump administration. Whether he took salary or not, he had benefits. I don't want to come here and lie to you like others - every intelligent person I know today is daily seeking for opportunities in organisations they don't control. That's why Dangote, Strive, Bill Gates etc still take Paid or unpaid Board Membership in companies they do not own. I sit on multiple boards, I earn from professional consulting and then dividends from investments before I ever look at profits from business. This is the secret why someone can run a business for 5 years without caring about profit while you are stressed out because your business feeds you but their business is for legacy.
Here are 16 realistic ways to generate income. I have divided them into four distinct categories:
1. Income from Underutilized Assets
Rent out a spare room: Use platforms like Airbnb for short-term stays, or take in a long-term flatmate. You can't be around me and live in a big house and I hear you are broke. I won't even talk to you.
Rent out storage space: Use your garage, attic, or basement to store other people's belongings via apps like Neighbor if you live in America etc.
Rent out your driveway: If you live near a stadium, airport, or commuter station, rent your parking space. Create a Car Parking Services website and let people book to park their car in your drive way. They do that in Johannesburg. I used to pay an executive car park service each time I am flying. They will come to the airport, pick up the car and drive to their home and they will bring it back when I return. Please don't do this if you live in Nigeria.
Rent your car: Put your vehicle on platforms like Turo when you are not using it. And yes, you can also put it on uber or bolt. Stop the big boy thing. In foreign countries, people who own Teslas and latest Mercedes dey drive Uber. Its only in Nigeria that someone with a 2010 car dey form too big to drive uber.
Rent out specialized gear: Monetize high-value items like cameras, camping gear, or tools through peer-to-peer rental sites. You can't own high value tools for your business alone. The same applies to churches. You can't be raising money for church rent when you can rent your auditorium out for events.
2. Low-Maintenance Digital Income
High-Yield Savings Accounts (HYSAs): Move your cash to an account that pays a high interest rate just for keeping your money there. As we speak now, Gemsbok has just secured a deal with a major bank where anyone who deposits USD into the account will earn interest in USD. We can lock the funds for a few months and return the funds when it expires. Find HYSAs and move your cash to them.
Dividend-paying stocks: Invest in established companies that distribute a portion of their earnings to shareholders regularly. Guarantee Trust and Zenith are currently the most dividend paying stocks in the Nigerian stock market. I am not advertising them but research more about them.
REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts): Invest in real estate portfolios like stock, earning dividends without managing physical property. I do not buy land or properties again since I discovered that I can invest in REITs, earn from real estate portfolios without the headache of land scam and bla bla bla.
License your photography: Upload your high-quality photos to stock websites like Shutterstock to earn royalties when they are downloaded. I have said it a million times that I started making money in South Africa through Licensed Photography. Please search this page back to 13 years ago and see how seriously I took Photography. I took professional pictures of nature and I made thousands of dollars selling them. Shutterstock is still powering AI companies so they are distributing more revenue to sellers than Google even pays bloggers.
3. Maximising Traditional Employment
Find REMOTE jobs overseas. Stop wasting your skills and degree with excuses that there are no jobs in Nigeria. Omo, startups overseas are desperate to find skilled but cheaper labour. Upload your cv on job search engines and hunt for remote jobs. Take your LinkedIn page more seriously than you take your Facebook page. Get serious with building your professional brand and not just your business brand. Look at me or even Mr. Strive Masiyiwa, can't you see that we are building more than just business brands? Why do you think we keep pursuing education - MBA after MBA. For decorations? Even Peller don finally gree say School dey important. You can say you heard it from me - Peller has gained admission. See eh, it's not always about money. There's something called PROFESSIONAL BRANDING. You need a Profession, a career, to achieve it.
Internal promotions within one organisation: Join an organisation and focus on climbing its ladder rather than just building your own business. If you can't find such organisations in Nigeria, look for them via remote job search. I know many people who are doing son well today by rising through the ranks. It takes discipline.
4. Low-Stress, Routine Activities
Participate in clinical trials or research studies: Universities and medical institutions pay well for participants in psychological, sleep, or medical studies. I will share links to some of them in the comment section.
Take part in focus groups: Consumer research firms pay high hourly rates for your honest opinion on products or advertisements. But if you don't know them, how can you participate and earn? That's why you should stop scrolling through tiktok and start searching for economic opportunities.
Data entry or transcription: A lot of AI companies are paying so well to random people who help to train AI systems. You are using AI but others are training it and cashing out. You don't need technical know how. Sometimes, it just needs you to speak or sign or take pictures and send to the AI company. And you get paid. Simple tasks but good pay.
You see, there are many things you can do to earn money and be comfortable. Na you wey decide to hustle.
Which of these are you willing to implement? Comment and I'll help you with the information you need to get started.
Everyone will not succeed in business - that's the gospel truth. No Mentorship can help. Some of you need a total career switch. You also need to know that the people you respect are also employed. Tony Elumelu is NOT SELF EMPLOYED. Let it sink.
