Do these, If you receive a call or an invitation to come to the police station

If you receive a call or an invitation to come to the police station because a case has been reported against you, take note of the following before you go:

📍Don't turn down the invitation. Tell them you will come to honour the invitation.

📍Don't go alone. I repeat, don't go alone. Go with an adult who can quickly bail you out in case you are invited, and would be detained for a bailable offéñce.

📍Get in touch with a lawyer immediately you receive the invitation so the lawyer will go with you, ensure you are not intimidated and process your bail.

If you don't have a lawyer, identify one now in your locality and connect. You don't have to wait for trouble to come before finding a lawyer.

📍Don't go on a Friday. If you are invited on a Thursday or Friday, politely tell them you will honour the invitation on Monday.

If you must go on a Friday, go in the morning and remember to go with an adult and a lawyer.

This is because bail is usually not granted on Fridays. If you are arrested on a Friday afternoon, you stand a high chance of staying in police cell till Monday before you can be bailed.

📍Before you write a statement, narrate your version of the story to the lawyer first, so the lawyer will direct you on what to write and what not to write.

Importantly, avoid Friday invitations to avoid spending your weekend in police cell.

Is that what the Constitution says that no bail is allowed on Saturday and Sunday? There are practices that need to be questioned on this planet earth 🌎🌎

Police Invitation? Don’t just jump into your Car and Rush to the Station

That phone call saying:

“Please come to the station. We just want to ask you a few questions.”

Can make your heart start beating like you just saw your WAEC result. 😂

But relax.

A police invitation is not the same thing as a court order, and receiving one does not automatically mean you are guilty of anything.

However, how you handle that invitation matters.

Before you rush to the police station, do these things:

🥢 ASK QUESTIONS FIRST
Find out:
👉 Which police station?
👉 Who is inviting you?
👉 Why are you being invited?
👉 Are you being invited as a complainant, witness or suspect?
Don't be afraid to ask.

🥢 SPEAK TO A LAWYER
This is not because you are guilty. It is because you should understand what you are walking into before you get there. The Police Act recognises an arrested suspect's right to consult a legal practitioner before making, endorsing or writing a statement or answering questions.

🥢 DON'T LIE OR INVENT STORIES
If you don't know something, say you don't know. If you don't remember, say you don't remember. Don't start creating a beautiful Hollywood script because you are nervous.

🥢 DON'T SIGN WHAT YOU HAVE NOT READ OR UNDERSTOOD
If you are asked to make a statement, take your time to read it carefully and where appropriate, consult your lawyer before signing.

🥢 KNOW THAT YOU HAVE RIGHTS
If you are arrested, the Police Act provides rights including the right to remain silent until after consultation with a lawyer or another person of your choice. You also have the right to humane treatment and must not be subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

🥢 DON'T ASSUME “I WILL JUST GO AND COME BACK”
Sometimes people receive an invitation and tell themselves:
“It is just police. Let me quickly go.”
Please don't treat a police station like a neighbour's house. Understand why you are going, prepare properly and get legal advice where necessary.

And let me make one thing clear

The police are not automatically your enemies but the police station is also not the place to abandon your legal rights because you are scared.

Know your rights before you need them.

Send it to that friend who says:
“Police invited me, let me go first. I will call you later.” 😂

TWO TYPES OF INVITATION BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES YOU MUST KNOW!
===================================
Police or the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) call you and say, ‘Please come to our office.’

Before you go, do you know what type of invitation it is? There are two common situations you should understand!”

1️. INVITATION TO ASSIST WITH AN INVESTIGATION

“You may be invited because you have information, documents or knowledge that could assist an investigation.

For example: ‘We’re investigating a suspected fraud case. You may have information that can assist us.’

You’re being asked to cooperate with the investigation.

2️. INVITATION TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT A COMPLAINT

This is different. A complaint or allegation may concern you, and you may be invited to come and answer questions or respond to the allegation.

For example: ‘A complaint has been made against you. Please report to our office to answer some questions.’

THE IMPORTANT PART

Both are invitations, not automatic arrests.

But don't assume that declining an invitation means the matter ends. If law enforcement has lawful grounds to arrest you, they may exercise that power in accordance with the law.

REMEMBER:
Assist with an investigation or answer an allegation. Know why you’re being invited before you walk through that door!
