What is Black Tax?
Black tax is the financial pressure placed on someone who is just beginning to earn, usually from family or close relatives, to constantly give them money, solve problems, pay bills, or act as the “saviour” of everyone, often beyond the person’s capacity.
It usually sounds like:
• “You’re working now, help us.”
• “You’re the hope of the family.”
• “God has blessed you, don’t forget us.”
Every small progress you make, every little breakthrough, every step forward, people are already calculating it. Suddenly, everybody needs help. Urgent bills, emergency upon emergency. Your income has not even stabilised, but you’re already carrying the whole village. Helping family and relative is good, but endless obligation beyond your capacity is a big financial problem.
Why You Must Avoid or Strictly Control Black Tax
It Traps You at Survival Level:
When most of your income goes to emergencies and family needs, you can’t save, invest, or build assets. You remain financially fragile. Money that could have gone into Savings, Skill Acquisitions, A business, Investments and so on, black tax will quietly steals it, always living you with no future capital.
It Creates Dependency and Entitlement, Not Progress:
Constant giving beyond your capacity can stop others from becoming financially responsible. Instead of empowerment, it breeds reliance and entrench poverty. I mean, I’ve seen relatives who refuse to work just giving birth to plenty of children expecting the only so-called breadwinner, who’s just rising to keep shouldering all the responsibility of fathering their own children. Pathetic.
You Can Fall Back into Poverty:
Many people rise financially, then fall back, not because they didn’t earn enough, but because they carried too many people too early. If you try to lift a family out of poverty while you’re just still climbing out yourself, you will all fall back deeper into poverty.
See, if you’re from a poor background, and you’re just beginning to rise financially,
please listen carefully: Avoid black tax. Black tax has buried many destinies.
Let me be clear: At this stage, you cannot save everyone and still save yourself.
Helping family is good, yes. But destroying your future in the name of obligation is not wisdom. If you are still building:
• Protect your income
• Build savings
• Create stability
• Secure your future first
You don’t break generational povertyby becoming a walking ATM.
This is not an excuse to be wicked, selfish, or abandon family.
• Set boundaries.
• Spend and Give based on BUDGET.
• Help within structure
• Give with limits
• Learn to say “No” and “not now.”
Build yourself first so you can help better later. Because if you collapse financially,
nobody will come and rescue you. This is not wickedness. This is self-preservation.
Rise first. Then lift others.
