GTCO Made ₦603 Billion In 6 Months And Declared A ₦1 Dividend. Here’s What Investors Should Know

GTCO has released its half-year 2026 results, and there is a lot to unpack beyond the headline figure.

The financial group reported ₦603.03 billion in profit before tax for the six months ended June 2026.

It also announced an interim dividend of ₦1 per ordinary share.

But here is where it gets interesting.

GTCO’s profit before tax was only 0.35% higher than the ₦600.90 billion recorded in the same period of 2025.

And despite the higher pre-tax profit, profit after tax actually fell 7.76% to ₦414.19 billion, from ₦449.01 billion a year earlier.

So where did the ₦603 billion come from?

The Numbers Behind The Profit

Gross earnings: ₦1.11 trillion, up 3.25%

Interest income: ₦873.39 billion, up 7.51%

Net interest income: ₦649.60 billion, up 2.75%

Loan impairment charges: ₦18.72 billion, down 65.94%

That sharp fall in loan impairment charges helped support the bank’s earnings.

GTCO also recorded an impairment reversal of ₦34.86 billion on other financial assets, which further supported its results.

But not everything moved upward.

Net fee and commission income fell 8.98% to ₦123.03 billion.

Operating expenses also increased by 7.31% to ₦277.39 billion.

And income tax expense jumped 24.33% to ₦188.85 billion.

That higher tax bill was a major reason profit after tax declined despite the marginal increase in pre-tax profit.

What About The Balance Sheet?

GTCO’s total assets increased 4.81% to ₦18.62 trillion.

Customer deposits rose significantly by 11.32% to ₦13.97 trillion.

But loans and advances to customers increased only 0.48% to ₦3.15 trillion.

Interestingly, investment securities rose 21.78% to ₦6.73 trillion.

This means a significant portion of the growth in GTCO’s balance sheet was directed toward investment securities rather than additional customer lending.

And The ₦1 Dividend?

GTCO’s Board proposed an interim dividend of ₦1 per ordinary share.

For shareholders, the dividend is one part of the investment story.

But when analysing a dividend-paying stock, don't look at the dividend alone.

Look at:

• Profit growth
• Earnings per share
• Cash generation
• Dividend history
• Payout sustainability
• Share price
• Valuation
• Future earnings prospects

GTCO’s earnings per share declined 17.73% to ₦11.18, despite the company reporting ₦603 billion in pre-tax profit.

The share price closed at ₦137 on September 28, 2026, up 51.05% from its ₦90.70 opening price for the year.

So, if you own GTCO or are considering buying the stock, the question is not simply:

“Did GTCO make ₦603 billion?”

The better question is:

“What do these numbers tell me about the company’s earnings, dividend capacity and valuation?”

That is how you move from simply buying a popular stock to actually analysing an investment.

This is interim and not final. The year is still on. Recent CBN policies and the ones to come will still affect the banks. The bank must remain conservative till year end. I agree with the GTCo dividend policy. It is a lesson for the new investors.
