Democracy means “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Nigeria is a democratic country because we elect our leaders through voting.
2. Presidential = the specific model of democracy we use
Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution adopted the Presidential system, modeled after the United States.
Key features:
- President as Head of State & Government: The President is elected separately, holds executive power, and is not a member of the legislature.
- Separation of Powers: Executive [President + Cabinet], Legislature [Senate + House of Reps], and Judiciary operate independently.
- Fixed Term: The President serves a 4-year term, renewable once = max 8 years.
So it’s not “Presidential OR Democracy.”
It’s: Nigeria practices Presidential Democracy — a democratic system with a presidential structure.
