FRSC Requirements for road users in Nigeria

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) team arrested & delayed me today because I don’t have FIRST AID ⛑️ BOX inside your car 🚗 , and it’s my 1st time to know about this

Do you know you are expected to have a FIRST AID BOX inside your car?

Earlier today, I was on my way to attend a very important meeting with a client.

As I descended from the bridge through the service lane, I saw officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

I was calm because my car particulars were up-to-date, and I had the major vehicle safety items: spare tyre, jack, fire extinguisher, caution sign and other essentials.

Then I was stopped.

“Good afternoon, officers,” I greeted.

One of them responded and asked for my papers.

I handed them over.

After checking my documents, he asked for my spare tyre, jack, fire extinguisher, caution sign and other items.

I showed him everything.

At that point, I thought I was free to go.

Then came the question I was not expecting:

“Can I see your FIRST AID BOX?”

For a moment, I could not even process the request properly.

I said, “Officer, please forgive my ignorance. I am honestly not aware of this. This is truly the first time I am hearing that a First Aid box is required inside a private car.”

He replied that it was a bookable offence and that the fine was ₦24,000.

I was surprised.

Not because I was against road safety compliance, but because I genuinely wondered how many road users had been properly sensitised about this requirement.

Then came the part that annoyed me most.

I was asked to “settle” the matter there with 15,000 Naira

At that point, I refused.

I said, “No, sir. Please book me officially and let us go to your office.”

After some back and forth, he eventually allowed me to go but warned me to get one immediately.

And I did.

I ordered a FIRST AID BOX immediately after the whole incident not because I enjoyed the experience, but because I do not want to be delayed or embarrassed over something I can easily prevent.

My lesson today is simple:

Sometimes, "IGNORANCE IS EXPENSIVE."

As business owners, professionals and road users, we must stay compliant not only with our business documents, taxes and regulatory obligations, but also with simple safety requirements that can save us unnecessary stress.

So, please check your car today.

Do you have your

First Aid box?
Fire extinguisher?
Caution sign?
Jack?
Spare tyre?
Wheel spanner?
Valid vehicle documents?

Do not wait until you are stopped before you discover what is missing.

Welcome to Nigeria.🇳🇬
