What happen to an Abandoned Bank Account in Nigeria

If You Have An Abandoned Bank Account, The Government Is About To Take It..

Some of us have done it at some point…opened a bank account for a specific purpose, used it for a while, and then completely abandoned it.

Maybe it has ₦5,000 left in it, or maybe it has ₦50,000 from an old hustle.

Most people assume that money stays sitting quietly in that commercial bank forever, just waiting for them to remember it.

But according to the official Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Guidelines, there is a strict timeline for abandoned money. If you don't touch an account for a decade, the government steps in.

Here is exactly what happens to your money:👇

The Journey from "Inactive" to "Unclaimed":
Your account doesn’t just vanish overnight. The law breaks it down into stages:

1️⃣Inactive Account (6 to 12 months): If you don’t make a single deposit or withdrawal for up to a year, the bank labels it inactive.

2️⃣Dormant Account (1 to 9 years): If it stays untouched for over a year, it officially becomes "dormant". You can usually reactivate this easily at your bank without paying any fees.

3️⃣Unclaimed Balance (10+ Years): This is where the big rule kicks in. If an account has zero customer activity for 10 consecutive years, the money is legally classified as an "Unclaimed Balance".

Where Does the Money Go After 10 Years?

The commercial bank is legally required to pack up that money and send it directly to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The CBN stores it in a special warehouse called the Unclaimed Balances Trust Fund (UBTF) Pool Account.

While your money is sitting there, the CBN actually invests it in Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs) and other government securities.

🚫 The Exceptions: When is an Account Safe from the 10-Year Rule?

The law recognizes that some accounts are abandoned for reasons beyond the owner's control.

Under the CBN Framework, your bank is strictly forbidden from transferring funds to the CBN if the account falls under these specific legal exceptions:
🧶Accounts Under Litigation (Court Cases): If an account is frozen or tied up because of an ongoing lawsuit, a dispute over an inheritance, or a business battle in court, it cannot be touched. The 10-year clock is paused until the judge delivers a final verdict.

🧶Active Law Enforcement Investigations: If an agency like the EFCC, ICPC, or the Police has ordered a freeze on the account while investigating a crime, the money stays exactly where it is until the investigation is cleared.

🧶Collateral and Liens: If you used the funds in that account as security (collateral) to secure a bank loan, the bank cannot transfer it to the CBN, even if you haven't operated the account yourself for over 10 years.

How to Reclaim "Warehoused" Funds:
If you realize you have regular money caught up in the 10-year rule, the process is straightforward:

📌Check the Lists: Banks are required to publish lists of dormant accounts annually on their websites and in national newspapers.

📌Visit the Bank: You must visit a physical branch or check your bank's approved alternative portal to fill out an Asset Reclaim Form.

📌Provide Proof: You will need to submit your ID, proof of address, and evidence of account ownership.

📌The Payout: Once verified, the bank forwards your request, and the CBN is legally required to release your principal and any applicable interest back to you within 10 working days.

Check on your elderly parents, relatives, or even your own old school accounts.

If there is an account you don't use anymore, either close it completely and withdraw the cash, or make a tiny ₦100 transfer into it once a year just to keep the legal clock from resetting!

Do you have an old bank account you haven't touched in years?

Bank maintenance charges or automatic interest alerts do NOT count as activity. It has to be a transaction initiated by YOU).

Great news: The CBN officially removed the annoying requirement to provide a court affidavit just to reactivate a dormant account!)
